My journey as a psychotherapist.
I have over 30 years’ experience in psychiatry, and from an early age, I have always been interested in people and what shapes our lives. I initially trained as an Occupational Therapist in Exeter, before specializing in psychiatry and gaining experience within both community and inpatient NHS settings. During this formative period, I actively sought psychodynamic supervision and ultimately decided to pursue training as a psychotherapist. My training with Group Analysis South West was rigorous, encompassing a year-long infant observation to deepen my understanding of attachment, followed by an introductory course and then the four-year qualifying program. I have also undertaken training in Mentalization Based Therapy, which has further enriched my therapeutic practice and understanding. A cornerstone of my development was undergoing my own psychotherapy, which has profoundly informed my approach, learning firsthand what I found most helpful and what was less so, and continually shaping my practice through these personal insights.
I have a particular interest in childhood trauma, personality disorder and autism, which has greatly influenced my professional focus. Alongside my private practice experience in Bath and on Harley Street in London, I served as Professional Lead for psychotherapy in personality disorder services in Devon. This dual perspective, combining NHS leadership and private sector experience, has enriched my approach and understanding. I now work independently online, offering flexible access to therapy for a wide range of clients, wherever they may be. I am a warm, compassionate and thoughtful therapist and look forward to welcoming you to awaykn.
